Tidal power announcement on the way

On Tuesday, the Nova Scotia government will make an announcement regarding a multimillion dollar investment in tidal power. By harnessing the power of the tides in the Bay of Fundy, which has the highest tides in the world, the government hopes to generate up to 15% of the region's power.

China has fired up eight biomass plants

(Reuters) - China has fired up eight biomass plants in leading grain-producing provinces in hopes of cutting carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation, state media reported on Tuesday. The plants have a total installed capacity of 200 megawatts and are expected to burn 1.6 million tons of stalks a year. "Compared with coal-fired power plants, these biomass projects are expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 800,000 tons annually," Xinhua news agency quoted Cui Mengshan, of the National Bio Energy Co., as saying. The company is a subsidiary of China's State Grid Corp., the country's top grid operator.

Australia taps beer waste to power fuel cells

Scientists at the University of Queensland, Australia, have teamed up with Foster's brewery to manufacture a microbial fuel cell that will operate using the brewery's waste water. The 2,500 litre fuel cell will generate power using bacteria that consume water-soluble waste products, such as the sugar, alcohol and starch produced at the brewery. This particular fuel cell is essentially a waste water treatment method, but it will also create enouch energy to power one home.

Ontario approves massive solar farm

The Ontario government has just approved what will become North America's largest photovoltaic solar farm. The facility will be built by an Ontario subsidiary of California's OptiSolar Inc., and will include more than one million solar panels. The project, which will be located outside of Sarnia, Ontario, will produce 40 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 6000 homes. To put it in perspective, Ontario used 27,000 megawatts of power last year. Looks like we need a few more solar farms!

Changes In The Magnetism Of The Sun Chiefly Responsible For Changes In Earth's Climate

Environmental consciousness should not be allowed to turn into environmental terrorism any more. This story brings up some good points, rarely touched upon by most media sources. There are other natural factors at play, and life is not what it seems. My opinion is that we should treat the earth well because we love our mama, not because we fear her. Luckily the next generation is acting more from their hearts instead of from guilt.

Tories to spend $300M on renewable energy

The Canadian Tory government will soon announce plans to spend $300 million over the next four years for renewable energy projects, specifically wind, solar, tidal, geothermal and biomass energy. The initiative is expected to generate 4,000 megawatts of renewable energy--enough electricity for about 1.5 million homes or four times the amount of renewable energy Canada has right now. This is great news! What else can Harper's gov do to help position Canada as a leader in green policy?

Ottawa to spend $230M on clean energy technology

Sounds like a good plan, but note how the Canadian government is being outspent on their green policy by Marks & Spencer--by almost 200%! I still think our government can do better.

Marks and Spencer goes green

Marks and Spencer has announced a $450 million five-year green policy plan that will cut energy consumption, stock more products made from recycled materials and buy foods closer to home, reducing air freight. The plan also calls for much of the chain's polyester clothing to be made from recycled plastic bottles, instead of oil, and millions of garments will be made from fair-trade cotton. They will also test the possibility of using unsold out-of-date food as a source of renewable energy to power its more than 500 stores across the UK.

Micro Hydro Generator

I want one for my seasonal stream! This waterwheel can supply enough electricity to completely power a household, and it only needs a water fall that is a minimum of eight inches. Life in a rainforest will be greatly enhanced by this invention.

Hempstone Eco-plastic

Thanks to the Zelfo Process, developed by a team of inventors lead by Martin Ernegg, hemp - a cellulose rich weed - can now be ground up, mixed with water and formed into an natural plastic. The product is being sold under the name Hempstone, and can be made so thin that it is translucent or dense enough to be used as a hardwood. A common application for it is in the creation of musical instruments, but the most interesting use of it has been for "eoo-coffins". Hempstone is 100% non flammable, non-toxic, recyclable, sustainable and biodegradable.

Another School In Arkansas Chooses Geothermal Power

The choice was made because the site for the new elementary school in Bentonville was not near natural gas lines, and electricity would be too expensive. Regardless of the reason, the school district will see increased savings for the life of the building (50-60 years) because they've had the foresight to dig 250 feet into the earth and harness the power of geothermal wells to heat and cool the building. Way to go Bella Vista Elementary School!

New Invention Converts Waves Into Electricity

Waves off the Oregon coast will provide power along the West Coast starting in 2007. George Taylor (72) invented a buoy that uses up-and-down motion to carry power ashore by undersea cables. Early testing shows that there will be little or no impact upon marine life and no GHG emission from the buoys.

Canadian Government Targets Renewables

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) commits to reduce GHG emissions from its department vehicle fleet by 15% by 2010, and by 2007, to purchase ethanol-blended gas for its road vehicles. Their strategy sets no targets for green heat applications.

Cost Of Solar Power Falling

A new type of solar panel made with the pigment of blueberries should eliminate completely the use of silicon, the most expensive part of harvesting energy from the sun. This recent discovery means the panels will become more flexible and eventually they will be made into transparent sheets. Solar power is now starting to compete with more traditional forms of energy, especially in remote areas of the world.
